INTERNATIONAL COORDINATION COMMITTEE FOR THE SAFEGUARDING OF AFGHANISTAN'S CULTURAL HERITAGE (ICC)

The Statutes of this important committee were approved by UNESCO's Executive Board at its 165th meeting in October 2002.

Its mandate is to advise the Director-General - who will inform the Afghan authorities, Member States and other partners - on measures to improve and reinforce international cooperation for the safeguarding of Afghanistan's cultural heritage, and more precisely on a policy framework for immediate and long-term heritage protection and the definition of priorities and practical standards.
SPACH is a member of this committee and participates in a constructive way to better preserve Afghan cultural heritage.
This committee held its first session in June 2003, its conclusions and recommendations are available at www.unesco.org.

CONSULTATIVE GROUP ON CULTURE, MEDIA AND SPORTS

This forum was created by the Afghan Ministry of Finance to serve as a government - donor dialogue about the formulation and monitoring of projects, part of the National Development Budget.
The UNESCO Kabul Office is the focal point to the Consultative Group on Culture. UNESCO's role is institutional capacity-building at the Ministry of Information and Culture in strategic programming and monitoring.
SPACH is an active member of this Consultative Group. We have assisted the Ministry and UNESCO in drafting the project document for "The Rehabilitation of the National Museum of Afghanistan and main museums in the provinces".

NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR THE REHABILITATION OF AFGHANISTAN'S CULTURAL HERITAGE

This committee was created by the Ministry of Information and Culture. The first meeting was held in April, 2003.
Its aim is to discuss concrete issues concerning Afghan cultural heritage among ministry officials, Afghan professionals and international cultural agencies present in the country.
Three different sub-committees have been created: Committee for the collection and restoration of cultural properties, committee for the monitoring of archaeological sites and historical monuments and the committee for publicity and public awareness.
